Cigarette taxes hurt smokers more than once; Tobacco settlement unsettling for non-smoker I am not a supporter of the tobacco industry. I quit smoking cigarettes more than 30 years ago because it was well known they were harmful to health. But even so, I do not rejoice over Florida's landmark $11.3 billion tobacco settlement award as much as I marvel at the duplicity of the federal and state governments. I question how clean are the hands of Florida's government as well as the hands of the federal government and other state governments, which are demanding retribution from the tobacco industry. How many billions of dollars did the federal government pay to subsidize tobacco farmers? Certainly the federal government continued those subsidies many years after the health dangers of tobacco were known. How many billions of tax revenue dollars have the states collected on cigarettes? In what manner and form shall the federal and state governments offer their mea culpas? Robert C. Kuhns Elm Grove; What would happen if drugs were legalized? The government should legalize drugs. Manufacture and distribution should be limited to four to six companies and the government will need to subsidize the marijuana growers to get them started. A nice fee will be charged to all sellers. All products must be labeled with a warning from the surgeon general that "This product will cause hallucinations and, therefore, may be hazardous to your health or you, and, after ingestion, may be hazardous to others." Once the drug companies start making a good profit, Congress will pass laws to tax the heck out of them. The U.S. attorney will then mount a media campaign against the drug companies and the evils of drugs. The state attorneys general will join to sue the companies for the health problems created. The coup de grace? We will then turn the liability lawyers loose on the drug companies and bring them to their knees, eliminating the companies and the drugs! An American fairy tale?
