Article: Japan Airlines fiscal first-half profit jumps nearly 5-fold

Fiscal first-half profit at struggling Japan Airlines jumped nearly fivefold from a year ago as the airline cut costs and focused on more profitable routes, the carrier said Tuesday.

Japan Airlines, which didn't announce quarterly numbers, reported April-September profit of 7.31 billion yen (US$63.7 million; 44 million), up from 1.51 billion yen earned in the same period a year earlier.

Sales for the six months fell 0.6 percent to 1.143 trillion yen (US$9.97 billion; 6.88 billion) from 1.150 trillion yen.

The airline has been struggling to turn around its business after posting two straight years of losses.
