Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole scored against his former club Saturday to give the Blues a 1-0 win over visiting West Ham in the Premier League.

West Ham had competed well for 76 minutes with its more illustrious London rival before Cole collected the ball in what could have been an offside position, rounded goalkeeper Robert Green and beat the covering defender with a rising shot into the net.

With Manchester United not in action until it plays Fulham on Monday, Chelsea moved a point above the defending champions to 31. Leader Arsenal was on 33 ahead of its match at Aston Villa later Saturday.
