James Murdoch was appointed News Corp.'s chairman and chief executive for Europe and Asia, officials said Friday, suggesting that he would most likely succeed his father, Rupert Murdoch, as head of the company.

British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC announced that James Murdoch was moving on from his recent post as chief executive of the satellite broadcaster.

The move "clearly positions the 34-year-old as the most likely successor to his father, Rupert Murdoch, as chairman and chief executive of News Corp.," said The Times, one of News Corp.'s British newspapers.

BSkyB also announced that Rupert Murdoch, 76, was standing down as its chairman.
