Jacob Zuma pledged Thursday the ANC would not radically shift its economic policies under him and said he would work smoothly with President Thabo Mbeki, the man he defeated this week in a bitter contest to lead the governing party.

Then the former African National Congress guerrilla ended his first public comments since winning the leadership race Tuesday by breaking into his trademark song, "Bring me my machine gun."
