Article: Sardinia vows to accept more trash despite violent protests

Sardinia's top official said Saturday the island region would continue to receive shipments of Naples' garbage despite violent protests outside his home that resulted in a half-dozen arrests.

Late Friday, police fired tear gas and beat protesters who hurled rocks, garbage and homemade explosives around the home of Sardinian regional President Renato Soru. Soru had agreed to accept thousands of tons of Naples' trash to help relieve the mainland city's trash crisis.

Six people were arrested, the ANSA news agency reported.
