Article: Defense attorney calls on war crimes judges to acquit former Kosovo prime minister

A defense attorney for Kosovo's former Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj argued that U.N. prosecutors failed to prove his client participated in, ordered or condoned a 1998 campaign of murder, rape and torture in Kosovo.

Ben Emmerson said Yugoslav war crimes tribunal prosecutors had little or no credible evidence to back their charges that Haradinaj and two other former fighters for the Kosovo Liberation Army, an ethnic Albanian rebel force, played a part in a string of atrocities in the secessionist Serbian province.

"This is a criminal trial," he told the three-judge panel, "not an exercise in speculative hypothesis."
