Article: Coast Guard says slow public disclosure of San Francisco Bay oil spill did not hamper response

A new report on the Coast Guard's response to a November oil spill in San Francisco Bay criticizes the agency's delay in notifying the public about the leak but said crews responded rapidly, the agency's top officer in California says.

Lawmakers and others have criticized the Coast Guard's response for a lapse of several hours between when officials knew the spill was 58,000 gallons (219,547 liters)of sludgy bunker fuel _ not 140 gallons (530 liters) as initially reported _ and when it made that information public.
