Article: Christine Ebersole stars in a concert version of `Applause'

"Applause," the 1970 musical based on the classic show-biz saga "All About Eve," is what used to be called "a star vehicle" _ a show written to play to the strengths of its lead performer, in this case film legend Lauren Bacall.

That Bacall couldn't really sing (and dance only passably) didn't matter. The woman has presence, the ability to command the stage, and the production, thanks to her box-office appeal, was a big hit, even winning the Tony Award for best musical.

Now well into middle age, "Applause" has been brought back for another look at "Encores!" _ the concert series that dusts off old shows, streamlines the books ...
