The alleged international arms dealer Viktor Bout, arrested in a Bangkok hotel room Thursday, has been described as a friend of warlords and supplier of guerrillas on four continents.
The thick-waisted, 41-year-old former Soviet military officer, subject of the 2007 book "The Merchant of Death" by journalists Douglas Farah and Stephen Braun, allegedly built his contacts in the post-Soviet arms industry into a global weapons business.
He is said to be worth hundreds of millions, to have lived openly in the Moscow area and to have worked for the U.S. military and the CIA in Iraq and Afghanistan _ while remaining one of the world's most notorious fugitives.
