The Olympic torch relay route in Tibet and to the top of Mount Everest will not be changed despite recent violence in Lhasa, a Chinese Olympic official said Wednesday.

Anti-government riots in the Tibetan capital last week and a subsequent crackdown by authorities has raised questions about security in the volatile region and calls by activist groups to stop the torch from passing through the Himalayan area on its way to Beijing.

"The Tibet leg of the torch relay will proceed as scheduled," Jiang Xiaoyu, executive vice president of the Beijing organizing committee, told a news conference.
