Article: Shiite Alliance calls on Shiite extremists to lay down arms, Sadr City wall near completion

A committee of Shiite politicians on Thursday sought ways to disarm extremists in Baghdad's Sadr City in an effort to stop intense fighting in the slum, even as the U.S. military predicted that an operation to wall off part of the district would be completed within two weeks.

The U.S. military said a seven-week operation in the densely populated area had led to a significant decline in the number of mortars and rockets being fired from the Shiite areas into the Green Zone, the heavily fortified slice of downtown Baghdad that houses the Iraqi government and the U.S. and other Western embassies.
