Article: Mauritania arrests former prime minister

Police arrested Mauritania's recently ousted prime minister Thursday as he tried to attend a demonstration against the instigators of this northwest African country's Aug. 6 coup, his supporters said.

The bloodless coup was led by generals who accused the president they deposed of ruling the country like a dictator, including blocking parliament's attempts to investigate corruption charges against his wife.

President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi and a number of top officials were taken hostage during the takeover, including then-Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waqef. All except Abdallahi, who remains under house arrest, were released after about a week.
