Article: World markets mixed after Senate OKs bailout plan

World stock markets were mixed Thursday as broader concerns about a global slowdown dampened relief over the U.S. Senate's passage of the US$700 billion bank rescue package.

Wall Street opened with the Dow Jones average 0.57 percent lower at 10,769.42, while Europe's stock markets were in positive territory. Britain's FTSE 100 up 0.79 percent at 4,998.65, Germany's DAX 0.28 percent higher at 5,822.12 and France's CAC 40 0.60 percent firmer at 4,078.74 in afternoon trading in Europe.

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 average fell 1.9 percent to 11,154.76 and benchmarks in Australia, South Korea and Taiwan also dropped.
