Willem de Looper

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Willem de Looper, an abstract painter and former chief curator of the Phillips Collection in Washington, has died. He was 76.

De Looper died Saturday of emphysema at the Washington Home and Community Hospices, his wife, Frauke, said Tuesday.

De Looper began working in 1959 as a guard for what was then known as the Phillips Gallery. He became assistant curator in 1972 and a decade later was named curator. In 1987, he retired to paint full time.

De Looper was known for his expansive, colorful pieces. His first solo exhibition was in 1966 at the Jefferson Place Gallery, where he showed large abstract floral designs. De Looper's style ...
