Article: Croatian president consults on PM-designate

Croatian President Stipe Mesic was consulting political parties Friday before appointing a successor to the prime minister, who abruptly resigned this week.

Prime Minister Ivo Sanader quit on Wednesday, saying he was withdrawing from politics. He asked that Jadranka Kosor, of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union, replace him, but opposition parties are demanding early elections.

But Mesic said he would appoint Kosor if the party proves that a majority of lawmakers support her candidacy.

Mesic could appoint a prime minister-designate as early as Friday evening.

Sanader has not explained why he resigned, but had initially denied it was due to Croatia's growing ...
