Investors seized on a buying opportunity Wednesday, picking up bargain stocks after a big pullback.
Stocks rose in light trading Wednesday as investors awaited the Federal Reserve's interest rate announcement. Major stock market indicators jumped 1 percent, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which rose 120 points, reversing their big plunge on Tuesday.
U.S. investors have been eager for more signs that the economy is strengthening and pulling out of recession. The latest assessment of the economy will come from the Fed, which ends a two-day meeting Wednesday afternoon with its rate decision and economic statement.
