Article: Peru's Credicorp says 2Q net income up 56.4 pct

Credicorp Ltd., Peru's largest financial-holding company, said Wednesday that profit rose 56 percent in the second quarter as lower interest rates and local currency loan growth offset the effects of the global economic slowdown.

Net income rose 56 percent to US$115.2 million, or US$1.44 a share, from US$73.7 million, or US$0.92 a share, in the same quarter last year, the Lima-based company said in an earnings report.

Net interest income totaled US$233.5 million in the second quarter, up from US$217 million in the same period in 2008. Net interest income is the difference between how much it costs a bank to borrow money and how much it receives from lending.
