Article: European stocks edge up, US steady ahead of Fed

European markets edged higher and U.S. stocks were little changed as investors waited for clues from the Federal Reserve about the global economic recovery's strength.

In afternoon trading in Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 was up 0.4 percent at 5,162.22, Germany's DAX added 0.1 percent to 5,717.10 and France's CAC 40 climbed 0.4 percent to 3,836.97.

In early trading, the Dow Jones industrial average crept 0.01 percent higher at 9,830.85 and the Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 0.01 percent to 1,071.54.

Most Asian markets closed moderately lower, while Japan's market was closed for a national holiday.
