Article: World stocks edge down ahead of Fed announcement

World markets edged lower Wednesday as investors waited for the Federal Reserve's latest policy announcement for clues about the global economic recovery's strength.

Britain's FTSE 100 closed down 0.1 percent at 5,139.37, Germany's DAX lost 0.1 percent to 5,702.05 and France's CAC 40 fell 0.1 percent to 3,821.79.

In midday trading in New York, the Dow Jones industrial average slid 0.1 percent to 9,822.47 and the Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 0.3 percent to 1,069.

Most Asian markets closed moderately lower, while Japan's market was shut for a national holiday.
