Not every soldier gets a phone call from former Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole wishing them good luck in battle before they head to Iraq.
But E. Nathan Shirley did.
The Syracuse firefighter, 22, is serving as a Marine reservist with a tank battalion that entered Iraq 3 1/2 weeks ago and - according to news reports - has thundered its way to Baghdad.
"Does anybody really want their son to go (to war)? No," said his mother, Ellen Shirley, of 7591 Cummings Point, Tully. "But it's part of the duty as an American, which the Shirleys have always followed through with."
