Most films that ponder the agony and ecstasy of making films are either nostalgic evocations of the past (Singin' in the Rain), sardonic commentaries on crass commercialism (Sunset Boulevard, Contempt), or faux-autobiographical explorations of the fusion of art and life (Day for Night, 8 1/2).
