An increasing number of studies have documented that media consumers don't learn much from news, particularly broadcast news (Wilson, 1994; Neuman, 1976; Katz, Adoni, & Parness, 1977). Yet, television is the primary source of news information for the majority (75%) of Americans (Pew Research Center, 2000). With criticism of television news at perhaps an all-time high, alliances between academe and the professional world have been formed to improve the quality of reporting in hopes of better informing the public.
