In a letter dated April 3, Romano Prodi recalls the commitment the EU made at the Millennium Summit and the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (August/September 2002): the number of people with no access to drinking water or water purification systems and procedures should be halved by 2011. He recalled the Camdessus report (presented in late March during the 3rd World Water Forum in Kyoto) which said this target could not be reached unless stakeholders made a tremendous effort in terms of bilateral or multilateral funding sources, the public/private sector or/and civil society.
