Approaching Akiyo Matsuoka's SoHo loft, a visitor might catch a gentle drift of Chopin -- the notes wafting softly into the stairwell, out the door, and into the street. Entering, the guest would see at once the player's small frame dwarfed by the Steinway Grand where she is sitting. The notes are louder now, but the lithe arpeggios still seem like falling water.
