In the Council Chamber of Broadcasting House, a dignified panelled room looking down Upper Regent Street, are portraits of selected former Directors-General. They are much the same size, large enough for three-quarter-length portraits, which most of them are. The exception is Lord Birt's, which is entirely occupied by his face. I was told that he thought that as the second founder of the Corporation, he might well take the central place, now occupied by Reith, but this was not acted upon.
