THIS week a public inquiry has opened into the Spike, a gigantic 1,106ft tower proposed to soar over central London from Southwark. It would be the tallest building in Europe and fully twice the height of its City rivals, the NatWest Tower and the Gherkin. The proposal by the developer, Irvine Sellar, has been encouraged by backing for tall buildings of any height, anywhere, by the Mayor, Ken Livingstone.
That public money should have to be spent fighting these egotistical shockers on London's skyline is bad enough.
More outrageous is that the Mayor should waste his energy lobbying for them when so many sites and so much ...
