Well-managed lawns are assets. They soothe the eyes, cool the air, filter out pollutants in rainwater, reduce runoff and soil erosion into lakes and streams and increase property values.
But lawns aren't just there to be looked at. People should be able to walk barefoot on the grass, have picnics, sunbathe, roll down hills, kick balls around, hunt for nightcrawlers with a flashlight and play fetch with dogs. That's what lawns are best for; in fact, there's no substitute.
All those pleasures are compromised, however, when a pesticide application keeps everyone off the grass.
