Cherries ripe from the tree are a treat few can resist. "Folks drive all the way from Missouri, Minnesota, Indiana--you name it," says Dan Kielar, who, with his wife, Julie, owns Kielar Akers Fruitful Harvest Orchard, a pick-your-own operation near Sturgeon Bay, Wisc. "Lots of tourists come up here to fish, but end up filling their coolers with cherries instead" Dan notes. What keeps customers coming back to Kielar Akers, and to the many other orchards for which Door County is famous, is the tart, or sour, cherry crop that peaks in midsummer.
