The use of DC/DC switch mode power converters is increasing throughout the electronics industry. Highly efficient, but cost-effective power conversion is especially key for portable applications where board space and thermal management are critical issues. Designers of today's portable applications face a number of tradeoffs -- overall cost, efficiency, level of integration, design flexibility and packaging -- when deciding whether to choose a linear low dropout regulator (LD 0), inductive switch mode DC/DC converters or capacitive charge pump DC/DC converter for their power conversion needs.
