HALF-BLIND and faint from hunger, Captain Francis Crozier gritted his teeth and set his frozen face against the blizzard as he mustered what little strength remained in his emaciated body to haul the small boat along the sea ice once more.
Like many of his shipmates he had resorted to cannibalism - a stew made from the corpses of his dead comrades - in a desperate attempt to survive.
But they had run out of human flesh, and Crozier's muscles and internal organs were wasting away while his feet were blackened with gangrene.
