LONE ROCK -- Eighty years ago this spring, the Wisconsin River was in full flood, knocking out bridges and making boat travel hazardous.
A young barnstorming pilot had landed along Long Lake, causing a stir because in 1923 airplanes were a novelty. But Dr. Bertha Reynolds saw it as way to get across the river to an ailing grandmother on a farm near Clyde.
"What's your name, young man?" the imposing doctor asked.
"Charles Lindbergh," the pilot replied.
"Well, Charles, I'm in a hurry. Let's be off."
