THE SMITHSONIAN'S NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, Washington, D.C.
Despite providing shelter for the famously cursed 44.25-carat Hope Diamond since 1958. when it was donated by jeweler Harry Winston. the Smithsonian is still standing. The highly mythologized stone is certainly in good company in this must-see collection, which includes such wonders as the 700-carat diamond crown given by Napoleon I to the Empress Marie Louise, the 382-carat Star of Bombay sapphire and the pear-shaped diamond earrings that were said to have been taken from Marie Antoinette as she fled the French Revolution.
