PORTUGUESE adventurers overwhelmed the Islamic sultanate of Malacca in 1511, kicking off more than four centuries of European domination of the Asian port. These days, Western commercial visitors to the Malaysian town are less belligerent but just as interested in reaping rewards.
Supermarkets chain Tesco recently set up shop in the city, its fourth opening in the country in 11 months.
The sprawling centre sits about 70 miles south of Kuala Lumpur, the capital, on the Malacca Strait, a key waterway between the Indian and Pacific oceans.
