It was rumored that Isabella Stewart Gardner strolled down the steps of her Beacon Street townhouse with pet lions on leashes, and paraded them down Newbury Street.
It was false, of course. But she loved it.
She did attend a Boston Symphony Orchestra concert wearing a headband that read "Go You Red Sox" in 1918, the last year they won the World Series.
"She loved the stories about herself," said Alan Chong, curator of collections at the Gardner Museum. "She fanned the flames of gossip and innuendo."
