THE PREVALENCE OF ASTHMA has been increasing in many countries, (1) and air pollution is considered a potential risk factor. (2,3) An increase in automobile traffic in Japan has resulted in a considerable increase in the concentrations of atmospheric nitrogen dioxide (N[O.sub.2]) and particulate matter less than 10 [micro]m in diameter (P[M.sub.10]). (4,5) The potential effect of these pollutants on the health of residents in urban areas remains a matter of concern. (6,7)
