IT may come as something of a surprise to learn that Newport West was once in Conservative hands.

The Tories held the Parliamentary seat between 1983 and 1987 at the height of Margaret Thatcher's reign, though her demise and that of the Conservative Party as a whole has seen the constituency become something of a Labour stronghold for more than a decade.

At Westminster and in the National Assembly, Labour commands comfortable majorities in what is the more affluent of the two Newport seats.
