Apr. 23--Some Berks County residents who were sickened by working with beryllium during the nation's Cold War nuclear-weapons buildup have begun to get federal benefits -- some $8 million so far.
But they say the $150,000 individual payments aren't enough to compensate them.
"It's appreciated," said a former employee of NGK Metals Corp., who asked that his name not be used. "The $150,000 was good when I got it and I paid things off, but the money doesn't go far."
