Jim Cochran, operator of the Swanton Berry Farm in Davenport, CA, recently noted that his farm has been growing strawberries free of such pesticides as the ozone-depleting fumigant methyl bromide (MB) for nearly 20 years, a practice other area farmers may have to replicate if they fail to earn a requested exemption from the Montreal Protocol's call for the complete phaseout of MB by 2005.
Cochran, who said he first began exploring alternatives to chemical-based farming practices in 1983, noted that Swanton Berry Farm currently grows organic strawberries on 15 of its 80 acres of farmland. However, Cochran acknowledged that ...
