BEIJING _ Talks among the United States, North Korea and China on ending North Korea's nuclear weapons program got under way Wednesday after six months of escalating tension.
The talks were the first since North Korea allegedly told the United States last October that it was secretly operating a uranium enrichment program that could be used to develop nuclear weapons.
All three countries regard the high-stakes talks as the beginning of a long and contentious process with an uncertain outcome, said Jia Qingguo, a professor of international relations at Peking University.
