A s the flag on the top of the church tower unfurled at the stroke of 10am to mark the beginning of St George's Day celebrations, the people of Alvechurch launched into a hearty round of applause in honour of England's patron saint.
It was the start of a day of traditional village celebrations as English as roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.
Children decorated flags with the cross of St George and competed in sports day events including an egg and spoon race and tug of war.
