The wave of house sales (more than 5 million in 2000) and mortgage refinancing in the last few years has put a lot of PMPs in attics, crawlspaces and garages with WDO/WDI forms on their clipboards. During inspections, they may find structural wood with emergence holes and exposed larval feeding galleries from one of several species of beetles. Now their training will be tested: what insect made those holes and galleries?
There are only a few possibilities--longhorned beetles (pine sawyer, old house borer), powderpost beetles (anobiids and lyctids), ambrosia and bark beetles. Distinguishing among them is not difficult, if you have the training and experience. ...
