2003 MAY 1 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by J.B. Henderson, MS, science editor - Adenoviral vector-mediated gene transfer of insulin-like growth factors can treat ischemic heart disease and heart failure, researchers report.
Localized expression of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and IGF-II boosted neovascularization and protected cardiomyocytes against apoptosis in a study conducted by E.J. Su and fellow scientists at Genetic Therapy Inc., Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Novartis, Summit, New Jersey.
They published their findings in the American Journal of Physiology - Heart and Circulatory Physiology.
