Contractors who barely began preparatory work on Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's $470 million Greenbush commuter rail line were suddenly told to close up shop for least six months while MBTA officials try to get a handle on rising costs. The order came from the state DOT and MBTA General Manager Mike Mulhern just over two months after contractor Cashman/Balfour Beatty (CBB) started the design-build job. Mulhern said that project costs already exceed the budget by at least $35 million. In the meantime, design work and applications for various state and federal permits will continue.
