Philip Morris USA, the largest United States cigarette maker, announced on March 4 that it is pulling its headquarters out of New York City after 100 years to cut costs amid a tough environment in the cigarette industry, as reported by Reuters.
The announced relocation to Richmond, Va., came as a stricter New York City ban on smoking in public places, including office buildings, was expected to go into effect at the end of March. The company, which set up headquarters in New York in 1902, said the move was not in response to the smoking ban.
The move affects all 682 Philip Morris USA employees in New York, or about 5 percent of its total staff. Already, ...
