Houston can trace its history back to 1826, with the founding of the settlement of Harrisburg, in territory that was part of Mexico at the time. Cotton was king, and Houston provided a key shipping port for that valuable commodity. The settlement was to have a short period of tranquility. The war between Texas and Mexico saw it destroyed by Mexican forces under General Antonio LUfpez de Santa Anna, and the area saw the victory of the Texans over these forces a week later as General Sam Houston emerged victorious at the Battle of San Jacinto.
