United Airlines is considering scrapping the $250 million automated baggage system at Denver International Airport.

The bankrupt carrier, concerned about frequent troubles with the system, might drop it as part of its renegotiation of DIA leases, people familiar with the situation said.

Complications with the system, which costs United $52.9 million in airport fees annually, delayed DIA's opening by more than a year in the mid-1990s.

United spokesman Chris Brathwaite would not discuss the carrier's plans for the system, citing the delicate nature of lease negotiations.
