Apr. 25--Legislative leaders approved a $16 billion spending plan just before midnight Thursday after adding millions of dollars' worth of pet local projects to what lawmakers called an "austere" budget.
The budget for fiscal 2004, which begins July 1, and a $180 million tobacco tax increase go to both chambers for a vote today, the final day of the regular session. Lawmakers will make their decision without knowing if Gov. Sonny Perdue will sign or veto the bills. If he vetoes them, lawmakers will be back for a special session.
