US forces were last night quizzing Saddam Hussein's former spy chief and his ex-deputy prime minister about the fate of the toppled Iraqi dictator.

CIA interrogators hope Farouk Hijazi, the ex-operations chief for Iraq's intelligence service, and Tariq Aziz will also provide information about the whereabouts of weapons of mass destruction.

Hijazi was taken into custody near the Syrian border on Thursday night, US officials said yesterday.

He is suspected of helping to mastermind a failed plot to kill ...
