In February FDA said that supporting scientific evidence suggested that currently available scientific support extends to a broader range of phytosterol substances. Previously, the interim final ruling authorized a heart health claim for only plant sterols esters and plant stanol esters, the substances that were the subjects of the two health claim petitions. However, FDA will now allow a broader range of food products and dietary supplements to bear the heart health claim in labeling when formulated with .65 grams of phytosterol esters or .4 grams of free phytosterols per serving.
